The Armageddon Launch Box: Space Marines vs. Orks

The new edition kicks off with the Warhammer 40,000: Armageddon boxed set. This is the largest launch box in Games Workshop history, focusing on the desperate defense of Armageddon against the massive Waaagh! of Ghazghkull Thraka and Wazdakka Gutsmek.
What’s inside the box?
- New Space Marine Intercessors: These models feature a mix of Mk X Tacticus armor supplemented with “nostalgic” older armor marks—perfect for veteran players.
- New Ork Boyz: The green tide is stronger than ever. Ork Boyz now come equipped with Shootas, Sluggars, AND Choppas, meaning they are deadly at both range and in melee.
- Operation Imperator: The lore follows a coalition of Blood Angels, Salamanders, Ultramarines, and Space Wolves as they surge to save the planet.
New Army Building: The Detachment Points System

One of the biggest changes in the new edition is how you construct your force. While your current Codexes remain valid, you now have more flexibility than ever.
- Detachment Points: Instead of being locked into one style, you now have a budget of “Detachment Points” (usually 2 for Incursion and 3 for Strike Force).
- Mix and Match: You can select multiple Detachments to represent a specialized force. For example, you could combine a “sneaky” Raven Guard Phobos detachment with a “heavy armor” elite detachment.
- Upgrades for Units: A new “Upgrade” tag allows you to apply Enhancements to non-character units, marking them as elite veterans on the battlefield.
Hobbyist Tip: Don’t worry about your current collection! All existing 10th edition codexes and the upcoming Armageddon: Return of Yarrick supplement will work perfectly with these new rules. Stay tuned to our shop to bolster your ranks before the new edition drops.
Missions: How Your Army Affects the Battle

In the new edition, your mission is no longer random—it is dictated by your Force Disposition. When you build your army, you choose one of five Dispositions:
- Take and Hold: Classic objective control.
- Purge the Foe: Focused on destroying enemy units.
- Disruption: Sabotaging enemy lines and performing actions.
- Reconnaissance: Scouting and positioning.
- Priority Assets: Securing vital relics or locations.
At the start of the game, you compare your Disposition with your opponent’s. If you chose “Purge the Foe” and they chose “Disruption,” you will play a unique, asymmetrical mission where both players have different primary goals. This adds a massive layer of narrative flavor to every match at The Circle HK club.
Major Rule Changes You Need to Know
- Objective Markers: Circular 40mm markers are out! They are being replaced by terrain footprints, making the physical layout of the board more important than ever.
- Cover Rules: Cover now modifies the Hit roll, not the Save roll. This makes units easier to hide but keeps the game fast-paced.
- The Fight Phase: Combat has been “cleaned up” with new rules for activation orders and faster dice rolling for damage.
